CASPER IS RECOVERING WELL

Casper is in the Vet Hospital and is recovering from emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction. Two days ago he became ill. He started vomiting, wouldn't eat or drink and was whining with pain. In all the years I have had him he has never once refused to eat and he has never ever whined. I knew he was quite sick.

An ultrasound showed a foreign body lodged in his intestine. He had surgery to remove it and is now on the way to recovery. They removed several chunks of white plastic, a length of a black leash (or collar) and a clump of hair. He had gotten into some garbage 2 nights before so that explains the plastic however I am not missing a black leash or collar so that is a total mystery...

I visited him today and he is sore and looking quite sad. He is still not keeping food down and is a little dopey from the pain meds but he is getting better. He should be able to come home in a day or two once he can keep some food down and is weaned off the IV pain meds.

He will have to take it easy for 3-4 weeks as he has a long lengthwise insicion all the way from his chest on down. That will mean no agility, no doggie daycare, no off-leash park, no wrestling. Nothing but rest and relaxation.

I am so relieved and happy that he is well on the way to recovery. My dogs are my family and this really had me worried.

Casper wants all the doggies in Blogland to know that it is not worth it to get into the garbage. And he advises all doggies to only eat actual food and never ever eat any plastic or any other non-food stuff!

I'm Cotton a rescue dog. Here is my rescue story. How many people did it take to rescue me?

There was the kind girl who took me in after I had been running loose in the small town for over 3 weeks. I was only using 3 legs because the other one was really hurting me. She took me to the local Vet who was also the animal control for that area.

That small town Vet who kept me for 3 days waiting for my people to come and get me (they didn't). It is believed that I was 'dumped' there by my people who likely live in another town.

The kind girl took me back so I wouldn't get PTS. She contacted a dog rescue.

A volunteer at the dog rescue took the message and contacted other volunteers at the rescue who found me a foster home. Of course my foster home is a volunteer too.

The kind girl from the small town also drove me 3 hours out of her way to get me to my foster home. Then she had to drive 3 hours back too.

My foster mom took me in and feeds me lots of yummy food, since I am skinny from my time on my own. She lets me cuddle on the couch with her and sleep in the bed with her too! The dogs who live with her have accepted me and one of them will wrestle and play with me whenever I want.

The wonderful volunteers at the dog rescue who have given their time to do the fundraising needed to pay for my vaccinations, microchipping, neutering, hip surgery and the rehabilation swimming that I do 2 times a week.

The wonderful Vet who gives the rescue a significant discount. She totally loves me and gets down on the floor and plays with me and pets me everytime I see her.

The friendly dog rehabilation lady who works with me at the the dog pool and has me do the swimming and exercises to strengthen my leg. Also my foster mom who does home physio exercises with me to help improve my leg.

And finally my new forever home who has adopted me even though I will propbaby always have a limp.

And guess what?

My new forever home is:

My foster home where I have been living for the last couple months!

Yup, it's true. My foster mom can't bear to part with me.

My official name is now:

COTTON VISITS THE VET

When Cotton came into rescue he was walking on 3 legs and holding up his right back leg. We are not sure what happened to him but the Vet said on the x-ray his hip was "a mess". He had pain if I tried to move his leg. However he could get around amazingly well on 3 legs.

Cotton visited the Vet last week where he had surgery on his right hip and he got neutered at the same time. Poor guy. He was a bit sore afterwards even though he was on an antibiotic, Metacam and a opiod painkiller.

He definately did not like his cone, but he did not have to wear it for long as he has been very good about leaving both areas alone. This past week has been all about rest and pain control for him and he no longer appears to be in pain although he is still on Metacam.

He has the funniest haircut from the surgury. Almost looks like one of those show poodles with his new shaved area. LOL

Unfortunately he is not yet using his leg as much as the Vet and I would like. Mostly he still does the 3 legged hop when walking and running and only puts down his leg very tentatively when standing still. So now onto the next step- rehabilitation. Twice daily I do warm packs to the muscle, followed by massage and then gentle exercises and ending with massage again to the leg muscle. Cotton loves the leg massage. He actually fell asleep during this morning's massage.

He's a real sweetheart! I don't know if I will be able to give him up fo adoption...

MOVING BACK HOME AND MISSING JAZZY

We moved back home last week after 4 and 1/2 months living in a motel. It's good to be home. Boxes are being upacked. We are trying to get used to the new slippery laminate floors.

THOR HAS BEEN FOUND!!!

Momma is so happy that she has tears in her eyes.

Why? Because Thor has been found and caught!

Thor is a New Hope Dog Rescue foster dog that got startled and bolted out of the yard that he was visiting over a month a half ago. Thor has been missing and on the run in Melfort, Saskatchewan Canada for 47 days and he was caught today!!!

Remarkably Thor is as healthy as ever! No frostbite- no weight loss. Paws and ears and everything else is just fine. This is just the best news ever!

Thor was seen may times during his 47 days on the run - sometimes even daily but he just didn't want to be caught. Some of those days were the coldest this year so far at -35 C (-31 F).

Thor's foster home made sure there were flyers everywhere in the town and told as many people as possible. They were not from this town so they had to leave but have gone back several times in attempts to locate and catch Thor.

The kind people of Melfort, Saskatchewan left food and water out for Thor and kept an eye out for him. New Hope and his worried foster home recieved many reports of sightings of Thor.

Many attempts we made to catch or lure him back him during his 47 days on the run. Today a Melfort couple was able to lure him into their backyard!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you also to everyone who has helped Thor to survive his little adventure!

Oops- Weve Been Breaking Our New Year's Resolutions

10. In 2010, we Casper, Buddy and Nikki promise that if we happen to break any or all of the above resolutions, we will look really really cute right afterwards and then give Momma lots of kisses and cuddles so she doesn't get too mad at us. ;)

Yup, we are still keeping this one!!!!

Ten Resolutions For 2010

Our Momma says she doesn't do New Years resolutions anymore so we decided too do some instead. Momma has brought to our attention a few things that we need to improve upon in this next year. Here they are:

From Casper:

1. In 2010, I Casper will take my Momma to an off leash park at least 2 times a week. She really needs more exercise. Buddy and Nikki can come too.

2. In 2010, I Casper will lose some weight and help Momma lose some weight by taking Momma on a leashed walk at least 3 days a week even if it is just a short one around the block.

3. In 2010, I Casper will not eat frozen poopcicles and then come in to the house and try to kiss Momma. I will also tell Buddy not to do this either.

4. In 2010, I Casper will not eat holes in Momma's jacket or pants pockets in an attempt to get that last kibble, kibble crumb or treat if Momma happens to leave her jacket on the chair.

5. In 2010, I Casper will stop counter surfing for food- No No, I really can't promise this. I take it back - this is just to hard for me to do.... (sorry Momma)

From Buddy:

6. In 2010, I Buddy will not escape the yard and go on a mad dash running around the neighbourhood endlessly, dashing in front of cars and worrying Momma to death that I will get run over or lost forever.

From Nikki:

7. In 2010, I Nikki will not bark endlessly in that high pitched bark when I think it should be supper time.

8. In 2010, I Nikki will not bark endlessly when outside and I see a person or another dog.

9. In 2010, I Nikki will finally learn to heel so I too can do Rally-O too.

'Twas the Dog's Night Before Christmas

When all through the doghouse

Not a doggie was stirring,
Not even a mouse;

The dog's stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The puppies were curled all snug in their dogbeds,
While visions of cookies & bones danced in their heads;

And Ma Dog and I were curled together,
All warm and cuddly, out of the cold weather.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my dogbed to see what was the matter.

To the window I jumped, as I am an agility dog,
Tore open the curtains and looked into the fog.

When what to my wondering eyes should I see,
A sleigh and four reindogs all cute as can be.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

Then faster than flyball dogs they came,
And he whistled, shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Rudolph! Now, Casper! Now, Buddy! Now Nikki!
Run on, run on! We must go quickly."

"To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Hurry on, hurry on, reindogs all."

And then, in a twinkling, upon the roof I saw,
The prancing and dogprints of each little dog paw.

And St. Nick filled the dog's stockings with toys,
And treats and stuffies for all the dog girls and dog boys.

And he left us with extra things too,
Bones, collars and leashes for the dogs in rescue.

Then he sprang up to the sleigh, and gave the reindogs a hoot,
And away they all flew to deliver the rest of the loot.

That's when I heard him exclaim, as he flew out of sight,
Happy Christmas to all dogs and to all dogs a goodnight!

Yay!! Bailey Gets A New Family For Xmas!

Well our little friend Bailey (Bay-Bay) is officially adopted! He has settled in well into his new home. He has been on trial adoption for about 2 weeks now and it has gone well except for a few little housetraining problems (oops). Luckily his new people love him so much that they are willing to continue working with him on this.

Momma went and visited him last night and he did remember her, but he has clearly bonded with this new family and that is great!

Bye Bye, Bay-Bay. Maybe we will see you again someday as you live in the same city as us.

This is our foster dog Bailey. He is a real sweetie. Bailey is an American Eskimo cross. He is quite a small dog. Bailey has been staying with us for about a month now. Momma sometimes calls him Bay or Bay-Bay. He loves to wrestle and play with us and Jazzy. He also loves to cuddle with our Momma. He is very attached to Momma.

Below are pictures of Jazzy, our other foster dog. Jazz has been with us for about 3 months. She is a bundle of energy. She can run circles around us all. Jazzy can manage a day at doggie day care and then have tons of energy left for the Off leash Dog Park or a run with her volunteer jogger.

Last week I noticed Jazzy walking on 3 legs, holding her left hind leg up. Then she started sitting in the yard and refusing to walk. So into the Vet we went. Turns out she pulled her Achilles tendon at the insertion site to the calcaneous (heel).

She had surgery on her leg a couple days ago. She is now sporting a lovely bright red wrap on her leg to hold the splint on and a lovely cone on her head. She is getting medication for pain and to decrease inflammation. Vets orders are to also decrease activity. No running, no jumping, no wrestling. Lots of crate rest. FOR TWO MONTHS!

Oh my dog, it's gonna be a long two months!

WHAT IN THE H*LL IS GOING ON AT THE TORONTO HUMANE SOCIETY?

Can this really be true?

A so-called "Humane" Society that:

-Leaves animals to live in their own excretement for days or weeks.

-Leaves dogs and cats agonizing in pain with no treatment.

-Leaves sick animals to die in their cages agonizing for days.

-Where staff members were being bullied and fired when they tried to do something about the terrible things that were happening.

-Where Vets were not being allowed to treat or euthanize animals that were clearly in pain.

Momma volunteers for a doggie rescue and we also fosters dogs. She made this video to show stories about some of the dogs that have been rescued and how their lives have changed.

Some of the doggies in this video are ones that we actually fostered ourselves: Meeko the American Eskimo, Winnie the German Shepherd cross, Joey the blonde mixed breed dog, Sunny Bunny the yellow lab cross and Ditto the German Short-Haired Pointer.

There are also other dogs in the video that stayed at other foster homes too.

When Momma becomes sad or annoyed or disillusioned with the frustrations and politics of dog rescue, she watches this video a couple times and she feels it's all worth it.

Remembering Sandy

It's hard to believe that it has been 4 years since you crossed the Rainbow Bridge... seems like just yesterday.

SANDY - Fall 1994 - Sept 22, 2005

After wanting a dog for as long as I could remember, I finally adopted my first dog from the SPCA in February 1995. Sandy was about 6 months old when I got her. I loved her with all my heart and she was very devoted to me.

When Sandy was about 1 ½ years old she developed a seizure disorder that was fairly well controlled with medication. At about this same time she also began to have many issues with fear and aggression. I spent many years learning about how to deal with her issues. I took obedience classes, worked with her, and consulted experienced dog owners, trainers, and Vets.

The best thing I ever did with her was agility. I was looking for a fun dog activity that would also help with her issues. That is how I met Shirley and Diane. Sandy and I only got as far as Advanced Beginners II / III and we never did enter an agility trial. Several times we repeated classes at the same level, but it didn’t matter. We were both having fun.

Agility classes helped Sandy much more than any of the other things I had tried with her. It helped to decrease her fear and aggression and she made friends with people and other dogs. I learnt how to manage her issues while continuing to have her in the agility classes which we both loved. I am so grateful to Shirley and Diane who helped me to be able to do this.

Eventually Sandy’s aggression issues escalated to the point that I had to make one of the most difficult decisions ever. On Sept 22, 2005, Sandy crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

A New Foster Dog named Jazzy

Oh my dog - it's been more than a month since we last posted. So much has happened. We will try to do some regular updates over the next while.

We have had some foster dog changes. Our foster dog Pixie attacked Nikki a few times and Nikki said enough of that @%#*%! So then Nikki decided to attack Pixie at every opportunity. Needless to say it was not a good scene.

So Pixie has now moved to another foster home where she is doing well. Thanks Joanne - you are awesome!

Momma then decided to take a break from fostering, but that only lasted 7 days as another Eskie was in need. Momma can say 'no' to fostering other dogs but to say 'no' to an Eskie in need is pretty hard. So after an entire 7 day fostering break (LOL) we took in our latest foster dog.

We have named her Jazzy (aka Jazz, Jasmine the whirlwind and Jazzy's hurricane). I think you get the picture... She is a 15 month old Eskie with a ton of energy. Definitely the most active dog we have ever fostered or owned and cute as a button.

After the Eskie Picnic we continued on our vacation.

While we were in Minneapolis, Momma went to see a big cherry on a spoon.

They wouldn't let us doggies in :((

Well we are back from our road trip! We have stories and have lots of pictures to share.

Yes, Hana you guessed right!

Our first destination was the annual American Eskimo Picnic held in Minneapolis, Minn at Gary and Stacy's house. And what fun it was!

Over 35 people, 57 American Eskimos, 1 white husky (that fit right in) and 2 shelties that stuck out in a sea of white fluffy dogs. ;)

Pets In the Park 2009

Hi doggies,

On this past Sunday I spent all day at Pets In The Park.

Momma only took me. Buddy, Nikki and Pixie all had to stay home. Ha ha ha.
It was a fun day.

Pets in the Park is a united initiave of 3 local animal groups: New Hope Dog Rescue, Saskatoon SPCA and SCAT Street Cat Rescue. The purpose is to have a fun day in the park with our animals and to raise money for these organizations to assist animals in need.

There were lots of trade booths and almost every both gave away doggie treats (yummy). There were demonstrations of flyball and rally-o, a silent auction, concession, entertainment, microchipping, and nail clipping and ear cleaning for dogs and lots more.

These are some of the people that were there:

There were all sorts of big dogs like big St. Bernards, Irish Wolfhounds, Great Pyerenes and this Afghan that posed for a picture.

There were medium sized dogs and there were also lots of tiny doggies like little yorkies, chihuahua's and these dachshaunds that were playing with the kids.

Gio and Romeo from Life Is Better With Sheltie Hair were there representing St John's Ambulance Therapy dogs.

This lab puppy was just too exhausted to stay awake for it all.

In addition to dogs there were also cats, ferrets and lizards present.

I got lots of treats, hugs and cuddles from many people. Here is a volunteer of New Hope Dog Rescue carrying me. I sure liked that!

I ate so many dog treats that my poop started to turn loose and green. Then Momma said "Casper, You are cut off! No more treats!

That's okay because I had already had lots ;)

I had so much fun and when I got home I was so tired I slept for almost a day straight!

It was grrrreat! I can't wait to go to Pets In the Park 2010 next year!

Rally- Oh Fun!, The V-E-T, Seeing Ditto and Pixie's Been Bad!

We went to Rally-O and oh what fun it was!

Here is Nikki.

Momma says Nikki needs lots of work especially on heeling.

Another thing that happened this week was that

we all went to the V-E-T for our

vax-in-a-shuns and stuff.

Nikki has been to the V-E-T an extra time too.

She has to be a conehead again because of another corneal eye ulcer.

This time it is on her right eye.

Nikki will be going to the Doggie

Opth-a-Molly-Just again too.

Once again we don't know if her name will be Molly or not.

We also saw Ditto again this week.

We all love Ditto very much.

She is about to be adopted out soon from her current foster home,

and Momma wanted to be sure that we saw her before she is adopted.

We had a doggie playdate at the off-leash park with Ditto.
She was so happy to see us and Momma too.
Momma was just as thrilled to see her too.

Ditto leaped and ran and was so silly!
I (Casper) was very happy to see Ditto too.
When she was fostered at our house I hardly played with her at all.

In fact I usually ignored her.
But when I see her at the dog park I just love to play chase and wrestle with her!

We are all hoping that her new people will want to do play dates at the off-leash park too!

And then there is our current foster dog Pixie.

Now I Am Truly A Hunter!

See how happy I am?

That's 'cause I became a REAL HUNTER yesterday.

*Momma says we have to give a warning about some gross pictures in this post.*

So if your people have a squeemish stomach, it's best they close their eyes while all you hunter doggies and kitties read this. For obvious reasons no hammies or their people should read this post either...

So we were at Rally-O practice at an outdoor field with our teacher from Life's Better With Sheltie Hair. and her doggies Gio and Romeo. There were lots and lots and lots of gophers. They are considered a nuisance because they ruin crops and dig holes. You can read more about gophers here.

After practice Momma let us off our leashes (except for Buddy who has his running away issues if you remember this post).

I saw a gopher in the distance and took off and someone yelled:

"Casper, Go get it".

So I did.

I ran way faster than I do in agility (where I pretend i don't know how to run fast) and I caught Mr McGopher!

I started shaking him and running back to Momma with my prize. She yelled "CASPER, YOU DROP IT- RIGHT NOW!" So I did drop it.

Well I was so pleased with myself. I came back to Momma and her friends with a big grin :))) . Everyone was killing themselves laughing. Momma laughed too but also had her hand on her head and was saying "Oh my God- I don't believe it". You see no one thinks I can run fast because I go so slow at agility.

At that point Nikki thought:

"Why abandon a good freshly killed gopher".

So she went running to it, picked it up and shook , shook, shook it. More laughter. More of Momma saying "Oh My God". Momma made her drop it too.

Then Momma got her camera and make me pose with my gopher kill but I was not allowed to touch it again.

Busy Taking Care of Momma!

Momma got sick and had to go to the hose-pee-tall for an aww-purr-a-shun. She is now back home and we are taking very good care of her. She is getting better every day, but we are not allowed to jump up on her. Bummer!

Questions we have:

1. Is a hose-pee-tall a tall hose that we can pee on? We hope so- we love to pee on everything outside!

2. Is an aww-purr-a-shun when we ignore a purring cat? We could ignore cats but we prefer to chase them. LOL

While Momma was at the hose-pee-tall she told Grandpa and Gramma to take us to the kennel. We like going to Joanne's kennel. Joanne has hundreds of thousands of MILLIONS of new toys for us to play with. Also there are lots of Boxers that live there and a JRT. And lots of other doggies that are boarding there too. It's a fun place! A vay-cat-shun without the cats (ok- there is 1 cat but she generally stays away from all the doggies).

You see as Momma says Gramma and Grampa are "not dog people". They think we shed too much, bark too much and they frequently complain about us. Can you believe that? Us?

Oh and it's not just us, they would say that about all of you doggies, kitties and hammies too. Actually we think that makes them "not animal people". Weird thing is Gramma grew up on a farm with lots of animals. However that's where she thinks all animals should stay...

Funny thing though, Gramma and Grampa INSISTED on keeping us at our home and they came over frequently to feed us and let us out. They even cleaned up after Nikki twice (with no complaints) because she had 2 accidents after being left in the crate too long. Oops.

We are thinking that maybe they like us more than they are saying... So we "helped" Grampa by guarding him from other dogs and people while he worked on outside home repairs.

We are going to be missing 2 agility trials and likely 2 weeks or more of agility classes while we help Momma recover. Bummer! But "First Things First". Taking care of Momma is our first priority!

Gotta go! Our work as therapy dogs with Momma awaits ;)

We Napped And When We Awoke Something Really Weird Happened....

HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?

Shall we explain?

Well Momma (and us doggies) have been fostering Ditto a young German Shorthaired Pointer for about 3 months now. Ditto sure has come a long way. When she first came to our house Ditto hid in the corner scared and shaking. Poor girl! Who even knows what she had been through! It was clear that she had not been socialized nor had she even been taught any of the doggie basics. She was scared of everything.

We do know that she had been given away on Kijiji and had at least 2 owners (likley more) in her young time before she came to New Hope Dog Rescue. She was so scared when she came to our house that she wouldn't drink, eat or even pee for the first 24 hours. All she did was hide in the corner.

So Momma started out by just leaving a bowl of food, some treats and a bowl of water for her. Everytime Momma walked by she talked really sweet to Ditto and eventually Ditto figured Momma was okay and allowed Momma to pet her.

Since then Momma has been very busy helping Ditto to no longer be scared of everyone and everything and it has worked! Ditto is now a fun loving, really active girl. Sometimes she still gets a little nervous but most of the time she is active, happy, excited with life and fun loving. Her most favorite thing in the world is to carry around her squeeky tennis ball and squeak, squeek, squeek then toss and run after it, retrieving it only to repeat this endlessly.

So while us doggies napped Ditto went to stay at a new foster home. Even in the first few minutes she was doing really well. She played and let her new foster mom and dad pet her and she even played with one of the cats.

Momma is a little sad but also happy at how well you have done. :)

Then Momma brought us a home new foster dog. Guess what? She's as small as Nikki and she looks alot like Nikki and me (Casper). Her name is Pixie.

Buddy Gets 2 Q's In Rally-O

Hey it's Buddy here. Momma has been taking me to Rally-O class. It's a really fun type of obedience. I guess she wanted me to be more obedient and also to improve my behavior on the agility course. (Hey, what's wrong with running away and making up your own course at top speed- it get's lots of laughs) he he he

Well I did learn to heel and a bunch of other stuff. Momma and I liked it so we entered a CARO Rally-O trial. Guess what? I got 2 qualifying legs (Q's) toward my Novice Rally title. Here is a picture of me and my ribbons.

So now Momma and I are going to go to another trial in another city in 2 weeks to see if we can get the last Q towards the Rally Novice title.

We might take Casper, but it depends on if Momma practices with him first. He's kinda rusty (ha ha -not in color but in the brain). He hasn't done Rally for a long time. Casper is gonna start coming to Rally classes too.

Oh and I really must thank my Rally-O instructor who is Gio and Romeo's momma at Life is Better With Sheltie Hair . She taught Momma and I lots of stuff!

We are gonna be missing Rally class this weekend as be will be doing agility agility agility! This weekend is the Terry Simon's Agility Seminar

I'll have to report on that on Monday.

Sunny Is On A Trial Adoption

Sunny (aka Sunny Bunny) is trying out a new adoptive home. She went there 2 nights ago. Sunny says she likes it there. Her new owner will be a young woman who lives with her parents. Sunny also has some new animal siblings- a huge friendly rotti named Ben and also 2 cats. One of the cats even came and gave her a kiss on the nose. The other one is still apparently hiding under the bed. Sunny really seems to like cats.

It sure is alot quieter around here without Sunny. Her motto is play, play play, and run, run, run and then wrestle, wrestle, wrestle and then bitey face, bitey face, bitey face... She even got me (Casper) wrestling again. Now that I've gotten older I usually don't do too much of that anymore. I prefer sofa surfing. LOL

Momma even thinks it's alot quieter too. She says no doggies are knocking over the garbage can or the footstool during our wrestling matches.

Momma will be checking in on Sunny Bunny in the next 2 weeks to see how she is doing in her new home. If all goes well her adoption will be finalized then.

GOOD NEWS!! MY EYE IS GETTING BETTER!

Woofs doggies,

Look I am now free of my cone and free of that eye ointment too! My eye is not totally healed but it is getting better. And yes I did have to go see my favorite VET a few more times but I like them as they give me lots of treats.

Momma still tries to keep me from playing 'bitey face' and wrestling with the other dogs (although sometimes I can sneak in some wrestling when she isn't looking). Also I still can't go to agility because Momma is worried I might get some of the loose black floor surface into my eye.

Oh and guess what? Sunny might be getting adopted soon. :) More about that later.

Nikki Sees the Doggie Optha-Molly-Just

Hi doggies,

Yes, I'm still wearing this cone.... (sigh)

This week I went to see the Doggie Opth-a-Molly-Just. Only her name wasn't 'Molly', I think it was 'Lynn'. Tell me, does that make her a Doggie Opth-a Lynn-a-Just???
Ha ha ha, I haven't lost my sense of humour....

Boy, did I ever get poked and prodded. First I was seen by the student interns and they did all sorts of tests on me. They looked in my eyes with lights and all sorts of different instruments, they measured my tears, and the pressures in my eyes. Then they dial-ated my eyes with drops and looked in my eyes again.

By this time I was freaking out. Squirmming and jumping back. I wanted out of there. My left eye is sore you know and they were all surrounding me. It was scary!

So they took a break and Momma held me and I started to feel better. After that I was okay and stayed pretty still for the rest of the tests. Of course then the Doggie Opth-a-Molly-Just Resident came in and then they dyed my left eye florescent green to make the eye ulcer show up better. They said the ulcer was even bigger than originally thought. Finally the actual Doggie Opth-a-Molly-Just came in to see us and she looked at my eye too.

The confirmed diagnosis is an indolent corneal ulcer which we already knew. The Optha-Molly-Just did another Striate Keratotomy but this time they were able to do it just with just a local a-nest-he-tic. This Optha-Molly-Just said she has an 80% success rate, so we are hopeful. We have to wait 2 weeks to see if it will heal.

When my regular VET looked at my eye afterwards she said that the Striate Keratotomy that was done was much more extensive than what my VET was able to do. Even Momma could see the grid of scratches on my eyeball! And they couldn't believe that it was done without a general a-nest-he-tic. Yikes! I stayed very still while they used a needle to scratch a grid of lines into my eyeball!

I go every day to the VET so I can get my eye ointment 4 times a day. Momma is making me be very careful. She won't even let me play with the other dogs! I'm kinda sad about that.

OUR NEW FOSTER DOG -SUNNY

We have a new foster dog named Sunny. Actually she's still a puppy. Sunny is a 6 months old yellow lab cross.

She was abandoned in a rural area in our province and was brought in to a Vet's office. The Vet did not want to euthanize such a friendly, lovely girl. The Vet contacted New Hope Dog Rescue and we ended up fostering her. Here are some pictures of Sunny.

Our Momma says Sunny is a 'puppy in a dog's body'. We didn't really understand but it has something to do with wanting to play, play, play like a puppy but being big enough to knock a person over! Momma also needs to keep Sunny away from Nikki's sore eye till it heals. See Sunny's Petfinder's page

Here We Go Again- Eye Surgery #2

Hi doggies,

It's Nikki here. My eye was only healing good for 2 days after the first surgery and then it started to get bad again. It was watering alot and I started closing it again because it was bothering me. So the VET lady and Momma decided I needed the surgery again. Here is a picture of me last night after the second surgery. I still don't want to open my left eye.

I am very tired from the general anesthetic so all I want to do is sleep. Our new foster puppy keeps on trying to play with me. Momma has to keep her away from me so I could rest and keep my eye safe away from paws and teethies.

This time instead of Momma putting ointment in my eye 2-3 times a day, I have to go and spend each day at the VET place so they can put ointment in my eye every hour or so. Momma will take me there when she goes to work and pick me up after work each day.

We are hoping with the added eye ointment my eye will heal this time. The VET place is nice. They are very nice and I have a kennel where I have a prime spot to watch all the goings on all day long. It is actually a lot more exciting than staying at home while Momma is at work. The VET people say I am very well behaved ;) Of course I am!

I am even getting used to this cone too. It's been 9 days that I've been wearing it- but who's counting? Ha ha ha

I'll keep you updated on how my eye is healing.

Please Help Save Puppies Like Gambit

This cutie's name is Gambit. He nearly died.

The rescue that Momma works with New Hope Dog Rescue saved Gambit from euthanasia.

Why was he going to be euthanized?

Had Gambit done something bad?

Nope.

The only thing Gambit did was he looked to much like a "banned breed". You see, Ontario, Canada has Breed Specific Legislation. Any dog that even looks like a "pit bull", or American Staffordshire Terrier or even any dog that MAY look like it has SOME of the banned breeds in it can be confiscated and euthanized! Ontario has already killed over 4,000 dogs with this unfair legislation.

Many of these are dogs that have never done anything wrong! Dogs or puppies like Gambit whose only "wrong" is that he is short-haired, muscular and has a particular type of facial features.

Luckily for Gambit a rescue organization in Ontario worked quickly to protect him by paying to have him flown out of Ontario to Saskatchewan to New Hope Dog Rescue.

Gambit is a real sweetheart. There is not a mean bone in his sweet body. He just loves to play with the other dogs in his foster home. See more info about him here is his link: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=12574430

Gambit already has several applications in for people interested in adopting him.

New Hope Dog Rescue had a DNA analysis done and guess what? Gambit is 3/4 Boxer! Not even any of the banned breeds are in him!

The Dog Legislation Council of Canada is trying to raise money to fight this Breed Specific Legislation (Ontario Bill 132) in the Canadian Supreme Court.

The Dog Legislation Council of Canada (DLCC) believes in promoting and supporting responsible dog ownership, dog bite prevention and dangerous dog legislation based on the specific dog's behaviour, not on the breed.

The campaign is called "Dollars for Dog's" and requests all dog lovers to send in $1 dollar per dog that they own. If you live in Canada you NEED to donate as this could be in your province next. If you live in the USA, your donation will be greatly appreciated. We know there are places in the US that are banning specific breeds too. Some areas have banned German Shepherds and Boxers too.

Nikki's Back From Eye Surgery

Hi doggies,

It's me Nikki. Yup, I'm back from my left eye surgery. Momma says it went well and they are just waiting to see if my eye will heal. We will know in about a week.

Remember I told you about the V-E-T going to sed-ate me? Well I found out that sed-ate was NOT yummy food! I decided right then not to co-oper-ate! Ha ha ha!

So they put me under a general a-nest-he-tic. Luckily when I woke up there was no nest- of -boy- tics anywhere near me. In fact there were no tics of any kind on me. Whew!! Close call!!

However there was this cone on my head! This is what I think of the cone:

One thing though the a-nest-he-tic sure did make me tired. So I've been doing lots of this:

Nikki Goes To The V-E-T For Eye Surgery Tomorrow

Hi it's Nikki blogging here.

Momma took me to the V-E-T on Jan 3/09 because suddenly I wouldn't open my left eye. I was walking around with it closed all the time.

Casper and Buddy thought I was just winking at them but Momma knew better. This happened once before and I had to have eye drops and eye ointment which I HATED! Good thing that time it was only for about 5 days and it healed.

So Momma has been putting eye ointment in my eye twice a day. I do my best to struggle and fight. I try to make sure that no ointment gets in my eye and instead it gets all over Momma (LOL). However Momma always makes sure to get it in.

The V-E-T told Momma it should heal in about 4 days. Well it's been 10 days and although it's better it's still not healed.

So back to the V-E-T we went again today.
The V-E-T says I need to get some of the ulcer scraped off so it will start to heal. Apparently it can be done under a local a-nest-he-tic for a cooperative dog. There ain't no way I'm gonna be cooperative! No No No! I'm gonna struggle and fight them all I can!

So the V-E-T is gonna sed-ate me and try to do the procedure. Sed-ate that sounds yummy doesn't it? If the sed-ate doesn't work then they are going to put me under a total a-nest-he-tic.

I'm kinda worrried about that! You see, I had 2 tics this summer. I don't know if they were he-tics or she-tics but I didn't like them so I don't want any a-nest-he-tics at all.

Momma just gave me supper and then no more food or treats tonight. Momma also says I'm gonna take a break from agility. She wants to make sure my eye ulcer is all healed up before running around in the dirt again.

So cross your paws for me that my surgery goes well tomorrow!

Meeko's new Momma went away for Christmas

and we got to dog sit Meeko for a whole week!

Momma just got home. It's so cold the car made funny noises all the way home and the car doors won't even shut properly.

So she checked the temperature. It said -39 C

And with windchill it's -49 C (-56 F)
You gotta count windchill cause the wind is @#$@#%$ cold!

Further information indicated this:

EXTREMELY COLD. Frostbite likely. Exposed skin can freeze within 1 minute. Outdoor activity becomes dangerous.

So what did Momma do ? She made us go outside to pee!!!!!

That's it! Were done with Canada! Two of us doggies may be American Eskimos but I tell ya we weren't made for this weather!

We are revolting!

And Ma Dog and I curled together,

All warm and cuddly, out of the cold weather.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the dogbed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I jumped (I'm an agility dog),

Tore open the curtains and looked into the fog.

When, what to my wondering eyes should I see,

A sleigh, and four reindogs all cute as can be.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

Then faster than flyball dogs they came,

And he whistled, shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Rudolph! Now, Casper! Now, Buddy! Now Nikki!

Run on, run on! We must go quickly.

To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!

Hurry on, hurry on, reindogs all.

And then, in a twinkling, upon the roof I saw,

The prancing and dogprints of each little dog paw.

And St. Nick filled the dog’s stockings with toys,

And balls and stuffies for all the dog girls and dog boys.

And he even left us extra things too,

Like bones, collars and leashes for the dogs in rescue.

Then he sprang up to his sleigh, and gave the reindogs a hoot,

And away they all flew to deliver the rest of the loot.

And that’s when I heard him exclaim, as he flew out of sight,

Happy Christmas to all dogs and to all a goodnight!

She found this letter posted on a rescue site. It says it all.

THANK YOU

Thank You for bringing this foster dog into my life.

Had I not made the decision to participate in rescue, I would never have had the chance to meet him. If I had sat here comfortably in my home and said "I already have four dogs and I know that I couldn't take in another - even on a temporary basis," I would never have met this dog.

Yes, it takes time to rescue and foster... but who gave me Time in the first place? And why or what was the reason I was given Time? To fill my own needs? Or was there another reason ever so small and seemingly insignificant, like rescuing this one dog that could make a difference in another's life? Perhaps to add joy, hope, help and companionship to another who is in need?

With great sadness, I sat down on a footstool in my kitchen this morning and watched as this foster dog bounced back into the house and skidded across the floor to sit ever so perfectly in front of me. He was the picture of health, finally. He was all smiles for me.... and I smiled back at his happy face. Deep in his eyes, the storm clouds of illness and generalized poor health had blown away, and the clear light of his perfection radiated out from his beautiful soul. He holds no ill will toward man. He forgives us all.

I thought to myself as I impressed this one last long look of him into my heart, what a very fine creature you have created. Tears slowly pooled and spilled over my cheekbones as the deeper realization of how wonderful this dog is sank into my internal file cabinet of Needful Things to Remember. Lord, he's a dog - but he's a better human being than I am.

He forgives quickly. Would I do the same?
He passionately enjoys the simple things in life. I have often overlooked them.
He accepts change and gets on with his life. I fuss and worry about change.
He lives today and loves today. I often dwell in the past or worry about the future.
He loves no matter what. I am not that free.

This very lovely dog has gone to his new home today and already I miss him.
Thank You for bringing this dog into my life.
And thank you for the beautiful and tender lesson on how to be a better human.

Hi doggies,

Do you remember our previous post on PAY IT FORWARD?

Well look what we received from Mr. Postman? Now we ususally don't like Mr. Postman and when we see or hear him coming we bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark ........ ( you get the idea- it drives Momma nuts ). Well Mr. Postman brought us this:

We were so excited.

We immediately knew it was for us!

How did we know?

Well there were 2 clues on the envelope.

Clue # 1

It says "Royal Mail" therefore it has to be for us doggies

- we are the only royalty in this house ;)

Clue #2

It says DOG TOYS !!!

Nikki immediately took the football and won't let any other doggies play with it.

She just loves it.

Momma tried to teach me how to catch the frisbee but I just couldn't figure it out.

Well it's official! MEEKO IS ADOPTED! YAY!

Momma is a little sad to let him go. She says it's bittersweet. Huh ?? We ask you .... How can it be bitter and sweet at the same time?

Momma leaked only a little this time. Maybe 'cause she knew this was a good home for Meeko and 'cause she knew she would see Meeko again. He is going to live only 4 blockies away from us! In fact Nikki and Meeko have a play date tomorrow. Cool!

How is Momma playing 'musical dogs?

Well it goes like this:

Momma is the volunteer Foster Home Coordinator at a doggie rescue and soon it will be Xmas.

So Momma needs to make arrangements to move doggies around 'cause the foster people are going away for Xmas and their foster doggies need to go somewhere.

We told Momma that maybe all the foster doggies could come and stay with us.

Really, what's another 7 or 8 doggies visiting? But Momma said no way!

So here is how it's (hopefully) gonna work:

First of all a new Shih Tzu named Cuddles is coming in sometime soon and Momma will have to find a temporary foster home for him to go to till we can arrange for him to go to his new foster home in another city.

Then Momma is going to arrange for Yellow Buddy to stay at a foster home that doesn't have kids as he is not good with kids and there will be kids coming for Xmas to his current foster home.

But the foster home that Yellow Buddy is going to over Xmas is already fostering Mojo and temporarily fostering Chip, Tiara AND Roxy.

So Momma is arranging for Chip, Tiara and Roxy to all go to new foster homes till they are adopted.

Which is great but Tiara's new foster home is also going away for Xmas and so Momma is arranging for a different foster home to take Tiara while Tiara's new foster people are away.

And then there are the puppies Skittle and Hershey. They are currently in 2 separate foster homes and Momma is arranging for them to be fostered somewhere too while each of their foster home people are away.

Got that all straight??

And what have we been doing

while Momma has been on the phone

and computer playing musical dogs?

We will show you:

Hanging out.

Napping.

Sleeping.

All that musical doggies has us very tired!

Foster Momma has been taking lots of pictures of me in the last couple weeks.

'Cause a nice lady is interested in adopting me!

I've gone and visited her a few times.

Foster Momma likes her

We are hoping the adoption goes through.

from Foster Momma.

TRIBUTE TO SANDY - MY FIRST FOREVER DOG

I've never written about Sandy on this blog except for the small Rainbow Bridge Tribute on the right side of my blog. I feel the need to write about her now after I have read the recent stories of Booker and Zen at the Zoo Crew . I've been there where you guys are with Booker and Zen.

Warning : this is a very sad post.

Tribute to Sandy- My First Forever Dog
Fall 1994- Sept 22, 2005

After wanting a dog for as long as I could remember I finally adopted Sandy a beautiful 6 month old long haired dachshund / cocker spaniel mix from the SPCA . Little did I know but she came with many issues. I was then a 'newbie’ dog owner and I know I made many mistakes but I do know that I did my best with what I knew at the time. And boy did I have to learn alot with her!

I loved her with all my heart and did everything I could do to work through her various issues (general fear, fear aggression, dog aggression, sudden unprovoked aggression etc). She also developed a seizure disorder which may have contributed to the problems.

As she got older the situation worsened even though I was actively working with her. She was a wonderful dog 95% of the time, but the other 5% was unpredictable, scary, and aggressive. Still I decided to keep her. I was committed to working with her. I was in a situation where I could do that as I lived alone and had no children.

I managed and controlled every situation with Sandy. It took huge amounts of energy and time. I kept her away from all children, and all people she did not know. I crated her frequently to keep visitors safe. I saw different vets, put her on medication, and saw dog behaviourists, worked on behaviour modification exercises. I socialized her with other people and dogs in safe places where the people were very dog savvy and aware of my situation with Sandy.

Basically I did everything I possibly could to manage, control, avoid her triggers and better the situation. Still there were many problems. I was bit many times. Sandy would draw blood but not enough to need stitches. Sandy would immediately be in an uncontrolled rage, bite and then 'come to', realize what she had done and run to her crate being very contrite, knowing she had done wrong.

I did this till she was 10 years old. In the last 4 months of her life she was becoming worse despite all my work with her. I could no longer safely take her out anywhere. Then one day she attacked me after I told her to get off the couch. It was the worst bite ever and I knew it was time.

I euthanized her 2 days later. I wanted her to have a peaceful quiet cross over to the Rainbow Bridge, but it was not peaceful nor was it quiet. She had to be sedated first. I fed her Snausages treats and she was happy as could be while I was alone with her waiting for the sedation to take effect. The plan was to have her fall into a coma from the sedation. She would then be given the final injection. The plan didn't work. Everytime the Vet came into the room Sandy became aggressive. The sedation started wearing off. So then we had to muzzle her for all of our safety, and 2 of us held her down while the Vet gave the needle. The whole time she was viciously trying to attack us. In the last few seconds her eyes were wide with terror. It broke my heart to see her so fearful and so aggressive even at the end, but I knew I had made the right decision. This was 3 years ago and still I am balling my eyes out as I write this.

I grieved for a long time over Sandy. I second guessed myself. I felt I had made many mistakes with her. I thought maybe I could have done more or had done things wrong. Then I thought that I kept her too long as she was clearly dangerous and unpredictable in the last few months.

One of the kindest things was said to me by a friend who also loves dogs. She said “Sandy had a great life with you because you were so committed to her. You were so willing to work with her. She wouldn’t have had those 10 years if she had been adopted by anyone else”. It was true. I felt better after that because I knew I had given her 10 good years and many wonderful times. I had done my best in a very difficult situation. I had worked with her until it was no longer safe to do so. I will always love her and remember the good times with her.

We are totally disgusted that anyone would do such a thing to an animal. However we are even more disgusted that the two 16 year olds who did this were only given community service and a requirement for counselling.

Canada needs to change it's laws in order to protect those who can not speak for themselves and that includes animals!

We read this sad sad story on one of the Eskie groups we belong to. It is a grim reminder of how easily such a horrific tragedy can happen. We are honoring Ella here by posting this story:

PLASTIC BAGS ARE DEADLY TO YOUR DOG!

In honor of our precious Ella's memory, I am crusading an effort to let everyone know that this can and does happen and hopefully I can save someone else from the same agonizing pain!

Our 9 month old Sheltie puppy, Ella, suffered a tragic, sudden, senseless death this past Friday. She suffocated to death on a bag liner that was inside a box of Cheez-its snack crackers. We were out for the evening and someone had left a box of Cheez-its within Ella's reach. She put her head in the bag inside the box to get to the crackers. The bag came out of the box but she couldn't get the bag off of her head.

We came home and found her dead from suffocation. It doesn't seem possible, that a dog couldn't get a bag off their head, but they can't.I have since learned that this occurs more often than you would imagine. There was also a family whose 6 year old Labrador got hold of a Doritos bag when they weren't looking. They found him dead with the bag over his head, having died the same way as Ella. I also learned from the man that is cremating Ella for us that he has had FIVE other dogs that have died like this in the PAST MONTH!

Make sure that ALL PLASTIC BAGS AND BOXES WITH BAG LINERS IN THEM (chips, snack crackers, cookies, cereal, etc.) are WAY out of your pets reach!!!!!! This tragedy has been a tremendous blow for our family! I have tried to be strong, but the whole scenario has played out in my head over and over and I have been a total mess!

I cannot begin to understand the senselessness of this and my heart is absolutely broken! Ella was so young and full of life...an adorable, sweet, smart, loving dog, and her life was cut short way too soon!

Please help me honor Ella, and save someone else from this horrific tragedy by passing this email to as many people as you know!

HAPPY CANADIAN THANKSGIVING (on Monday October 13 th)

Hi everydoggie,

Monday Oct 13 th is our Thanksgiving here in Canada.

(It's always the 2nd Monday in October.)

So what are we doing for this long weekend holiday?

Will it involve eating turkey? YES

Visiting the relatives? NO.

(the relatives are non - dog people anyways)

How about doing agility? YES

We think Momma obviously has her priorities right! LOL

Buddy and I ( Casper ) and Momma are going to the "Turkey Trial"

-a 3 day agility event held in a nearby city

It includes 2 dinners - one will definately be a turkey dinner with all the fixings,

lots of agility fun with friends both 4 legged and 2 legged

and we get to stay in a motel too!

Nikki and Meeko are going to stay at a friend' s place.

They both love it there as they have tons of new toys to play with

and all sorts of other dogs to wrestle and play with.

Pawsome!!

Momma is starting to pack right now.

We have to go to supervise.

(MAKE SURE SHE PACKS THE DOG BISCUITS)
